Philosophy of Education

“Where Words Fail, music speaks” - Hans Christian Andersen

Music is one of the few things completely unique to human beings; a form of expression that

surpasses where normal communication fails.  This is one of the reasons that musicals are so popular.

Everyone at some point in their lives connects to a piece of music the genre may differ from person to

person but the connection is the same. However, the setup of the society has made music less accessible

for the public and available for pursuit only by the elite or the most talented musician. It is my aim to break that mold.

In my teaching I want to push students to understand that they too have the skills to be a musician

and that it is not limited to the very best. I believe that everyone is a musician in some form and it is my

goal to help students unlock their inner musician. My goal is to have students walk away from my class

with a greater understanding of their own ability as musicians as well as a greater understanding of music from around the globe. I hope it kindles the flame of passion in those students that already have a love for music and creates a spark interest in those who have never considered it.

My philosophy is based firmly in my perspective as a global citizen myself as I hope to expose my students to a variety of different music and teaching styles. My students will experience and perform works of music from around the world. My personal experience with multiple cultures has lead me to believe that understanding another culture can help to strengthen a person’s understanding of their own lives as well as open their minds to

the vastness of the musical world and perhaps a broaden their understanding of  music. The music will be taught in a variety of different techniques alongside the standard choir/band format. Teaching correct technique and developing tone will have its rightfully important place in the classroom; however it will not be the only focus of my classroom. I believe that movement should be an equally important part of singing and training the voice. Games and movement exercises will be used to help develop diaphragm support and breathe control. The classroom will be managed on the ideals of respect, fun, and learning. Students should leave the classroom feeling energized and excited about music and the activities of the day.

It is my belief that making music is a fundamental human right and need; it is our most basic way

to express emotions when words fail us. I hope to share this belief and my passion for singing with each

class I encounter. For everyone is capable of something musical, if nothing else to simply share and enjoy

it.
